A Visit to The City Grill......

No small community is complete without  a "meet and eat" sort of place...
.....a gathering place.....a City Grill.....

The Hurtsboro City Grill (just a hop, skip, and a jump down Highway 26) is reminiscient of Mayberry RFD and The Andy Griffith Show complete (almost) with Aunt Bea, Opie, Sheriff Taylor, Deputy Barney Fife, the Barber, the town drunk, et cetera.....almost.
The characters are different as are their "job descriptions", but the atmosphere is the same.

Everyone knows everyone, the owner runs the cash register and goes from table to table refreshing tea glasses and greeting each diner by name....and his parents did the same before him.

Only open for breakfast and lunch, there is a lunch buffet daily (except Sundays...closed on Sundays) - a meat, 2 vegetables, cornbread, and good ol' southern SWEET tea, and two people can eat for $14.00.  You can add a slice of pie for $2 more.  The pies are homemade by ladies who live in Hurtsboro...Chocolate meringue, coconut creme, lemon meringue, pecan (pronounced puh-cahn), and my favorite...egg custard!
You can also order a hamburger, fries, or a lettuce salad with chicken, etc...but it takes longer because they have to special-cook it.  When you order this, they send the cook out from the back and you tell her what you want...she sends it out to you when it's ready:)

No set closing time...but usually around 2:00...or when they run out of food...whichever comes first!

Their fried chicken is so good that I ordered enough to serve at a backyard supper party we gave for a friend who got married...along with "puh-can" and egg custard pies:)

It's the sort of place that sent a pie and a plate of fried chicken to us when my father died because he made it a point to travel from the Land of Pittsview (a hop, skip, and jump down the backroads) to eat there just about every Thursday...

It's the sort of place that would see us coming in when our children were small...and the owner's mother would head to the kitchen to tell them to fix a grilled cheese sandwich because she knew that's what our daughter wanted!

It's just that sort of place!

Another lovely day in the Land of Hatchechubbee!

Hoping your day is lovely, too!

aaawwww....I love the part about the dinner plate sent to you when your father died. How thoughful/meaningful. And I'm left wondering how many babies bottoms have sat in the yellow booster seat over the years?! It looks like it's been there since day one! ....perhaps your daughter's was among them?! ;)

Yes, every town should have a place like that. I live in the city but we do have a few local places we frequent, not like your grill though, that's a treasure for sure.

Forgot to say, I do have the urge to give that booster seat a good scrubbing though :)
